The Artificial Intelligence Policy Institute (AIPI) is an independent research organization dedicated to advancing public understanding of the trajectory, capabilities, and implications of the most powerful current and future AI systems. We collaborate with policymakers, journalists, researchers, and the broader AI safety community to ensure that governance decisions are grounded in the best available evidence and analysis. We believe that informed, forward-looking governance can help society navigate AI’s transformative impacts while preserving the benefits of innovation.
Public Opinion Tracking
Effective AI policy must reflect the will of the people. Through collaborations with leading polling firms, we regularly poll US voters to assess the level of public concern, understand voters’ response to events in the news, and monitor support for various policy proposals. This research helps ensure that governance decisions account for public priorities and concerns.
Policy Research
AIPI conducts in-depth research into the capabilities, risks, and governance questions surrounding advanced AI systems. Our findings are published in comprehensive reports and policy proposals, offering in-depth analysis to guide policy recommendations. We ensure that our research is accessible to lawmakers, researchers, and the general public for informed decision-making.
Media and Policymaker Engagement
We work to bridge the information gap between the AI community and those who influence public opinion and policy. We work closely with government officials, journalists and AI technologists, providing the resources necessary to understand AI technology, the state of public opinion and the range of policy proposals available. By facilitating well-informed decisions and discussions on AI, we strive to create an environment where technological advancements and public welfare go together.

Daniel Colson
Executive Director
Daniel Colson is the founder and executive director of the AI Policy Institute, an independent research organization focused on the trajectory and governance implications of the most powerful current and future AI systems. He separately is the founder and executive director of the AI Policy Network, an advocacy and lobbying non-profit. Previously, Daniel co-founded fintech company Reserve.
