We built AI Policy Daily because we needed it. Daniel Colson, Founder and Executive Director of the AI Policy Institute, started assembling a morning brief for internal use last year. The AI news we needed was scattered across wire services, trade press, committee schedules, arXiv, and a dozen Substacks, and no single source pulled it together. We built a prototype of a research pipeline and sent the result to our friends each morning. It spread from there, and at some point we had the “gonna need a bigger boat” moment. Over the last few months, our in-house engineering and editing team has turned a workaround into a publication that we think anyone in the AI space would find useful.
We’ve been sending the beta version for a few months, and reporters on the AI beat have written back unprompted. One: “This newsletter is so great, you’re finding a lot of stuff that wasn’t on my radar.” Another: “Getting a ton out of the newsletter … not just saying that.”
The format. Here’s what lands in your inbox. Every issue opens with a bottom-line-up-front summary you can read in under a minute. Below that, the full brief: the day’s policy developments, a China watch, a federal policy tracker covering hearings and markups, capability and research news, industry and market moves, and global developments. Each item says what happened, why it matters, and links to the underlying sources.
The method. A software pipeline built in-house gathers and drafts each edition. Humans run the rest: our research team checks the facts behind every item, and the editorial team edits each issue by hand before it goes out. Our editorial standards and corrections policy are public. When we get something wrong, we say so.
