Under the accord, each company agrees to put robust controls in place to watch its most powerful systems for dangers such as helping with cyberattacks or biological and chemical weapons, to have an independent outside auditor check whether those controls work, and to have a committee of its board of directors oversee safety and make sure problems get fixed. Presented with that description, 1,008 U.S. likely voters surveyed on October 6 and 7, 2026, gave the accord 61% support and 16% opposition on the initial question. With those who were not sure included, support reaches 74% and opposition 26%.

Public Support for Pacing the Frontier

Opposition to Local Data Centers Falls When AI Safety Guardrails are Attached, AIPI Poll Finds

Attaching safety guardrails to a community data center makes opposition fall from 57% to 38%

National polling from the AI Policy Institute (AIPI) finds that voters’ opposition to local data centers turns less on the data centers themselves than on whether they come with rules: the same facility draws majority opposition when it carries no AI-specific safeguards, and majority support once safety guardrails are attached.

The AI Safety Majority

Bipartisan Majorities Back Three AI Chip Security Bills, New AIPI Poll Finds

Likely voters support the AI OVERWATCH Act, the MATCH Act, and the Chip Security Act by margins of at least four to one

Two-thirds want powerful AI kept away from U.S. adversaries

Today, new national polling from the AI Policy Institute (AIPI) finds that likely voters across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support three major AI chip security bills before Congress.

Blog: Your day in AI policy starts here.

AI Policy Daily launches today. It’s a free email brief, sent every weekday morning, covering what you need to start your day in AI policy: Congress, the White House, the agencies, the frontier companies, and the rest of the world. The survey also finds that nearly 70% of voters in the Golden State that AI safety legislation to prevent catastrophic risks now before models get too powerful is necessary, while under 20% of them catastrophic risks are currently too speculative to warrant legislation. Additionally, three times as many voters would be less likely to support Newsom in a presidential primary if he vetoes landmark state-level AI legislation SB 1047 than would be more likely to support him should he choose to do so. Moving forward, if the California governor were to veto the legislation, more than half of voters want the State Legislature to put it on the ballot as a ballot measure and a plurality would assign responsibility to Newsom if an AI-enabled catastrophe were to occur.

Poll: 7 in 10 Californians Support SB1047, Will Blame Governor Newsom for AI-Enabled Catastrophe if He Vetoes

As opponents angle for Governor Newsom to veto the bill, 65% of California voters say they would put at least partial responsibility on Governor Newsom for an AI-enabled catastrophe should he strike the bill down

40% of California voters, including 32% of Democrats, say they would be less likely to vote for Governor Newsom in a future presidential primary election should he veto SB1047

Poll: Majority of Voters Want A Potential Harris Administration to Prioritize AI Regulations That Minimize Risk

In a test of Vice President Harris’s existing comments on AI, 63% of voters most prefer a message about ensuring AI is adopted and regulated in a way that fosters cooperation across sectors, minimizes harm and maximizes benefit.

A new Artificial Intelligence Policy Institute
(AIPI) poll shows that voters overwhelmingly want a potential Kamala Harris administration to focus on safety mandates and minimizing the risk of AI.
