Bipartisan Majorities Back Three AI Chip Security Bills, New AIPI Poll Finds
Likely voters support the AI OVERWATCH Act, the MATCH Act, and the Chip Security Act by margins of at least four to one
Two-thirds want powerful AI kept away from U.S. adversaries
Today, new national polling from the AI Policy Institute (AIPI) finds that likely voters across the political spectrum overwhelmingly support three major AI chip security bills before Congress.
- AI OVERWATCH Act — 66% support, 13% oppose. The bill would strengthen congressional oversight of advanced AI chip and technology exports to countries of concern. Republicans back it 72%, Democrats 63%, and independents 61%.
- MATCH Act — 63% support, 14% oppose. The bill would require allied nations to match U.S. controls on exports of advanced chipmaking equipment to China. Republicans back it 77%, Democrats 59%, and independents 50%.
- Chip Security Act — 60% support, 15% oppose. The bill would require exporters of advanced AI chips to add security checks and report signs that chips are being sent to banned countries or users. Republicans back it 68%, Democrats 57%, and independents 54%.
“Voters support smart export controls, regardless of political party,” said Daniel Colson, Executive Director of the AI Policy Institute. “When security and commercial innovation are framed as competing priorities, voters consistently place security first. These data suggest that voters understand advanced AI chips primarily as a national security concern, and one that they take seriously.”
Additionally, two-thirds of voters say keeping powerful AI away from America’s adversaries should rank above accelerating innovation (preferred by 21%). And 64 percent say advanced chip sales should be restricted when national security requires it, rather than maximized for exports (25%).

About the poll
The survey of 1,023 likely U.S. voters was fielded online on June 18, 2026. Results were weighted by gender, race, education, 2024 presidential vote, and age, and adjusted for attention checks. The margin of error is ±3.9 percent. Polling was conducted by the AI Policy Institute.
